Disney+ is finally here! After a long wait Disney has released their streaming service to the world. In an attempt to compete with Netflix, Disney has combined the film assets from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic all under one app. At $6.99 per month, and an extra incentive for Disney Visa cardholders, we knew we couldn’t pass it up!
Now that we have lived with Disney+ (pronounced “disney plus”) for two days we thought we would share the shows that we were most excited to see. One of the draws of Disney+ is that the old Disney Vault is now wide open! Here are 5 movies that we loved watching on Disney+ this week:
1. Sleeping Beauty
Sleeping Beauty is Kelly’s favorite movie from her childhood. In the summer we chose to get Cinderella on Amazon Prime, so we were excited to watch Princess Aurora and Maleficent for the first time as a family on Tuesday.
Some of you probably haven’t seen Sleeping Beauty since the days of VHS and 4:3 aspect ratio TVs. It’s definitely worth giving this Disney classic a watch in high definition!
2. One Hundred and One Dalmatians
The feeling of nostalgia is an incredible one when you realize how much you simultaneously remember and have forgotten about a favorite movie. I had forgotten how much I hate Cruella de Ville in One Hundred and One Dalmatians. I was surprised how I remembered Danny the Great Dane in London, Collie and the three cows at the dairy farm, and the black lab in the town.
That nostalgic feeling alone makes Disney+ worth the cost and makes us so happy these movies are available.
3. Dumbo (2019)
We were both surprised with the 1941 Dumbo film became a household favorite after we bought it through Prime last year. We were even more excited when the 2019 Dumbo film was released on my birthday this year. Since we never got a chance to see it in theaters, the announcement that the new film would be available on Disney+’s launch day was happy news!
Many people probably forgot how trippy the 1941 version was. Tim Burton did a great job with the 2019 version, even if there were some strong similarities to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
4. The Imagineering Story
This documentary series was getting rave reviews by noon on Tuesday. Naturally we quickly moved it up on our watchlist. Unlike shows on Netflix, Disney+ will not be dropping all episodes of this series at one time.
The first episode of The Imagineering Story takes viewers through the first 15 years of classic Disney Imagineering. That is a significant amount of time to cover in a 67 minute show! That time period covers most things related to Disneyland’s inception up until Walt’s death. We can’t wait to see what’s in the next episode!
5. The Fox and the Hound
Finally we have one last nostalgic childhood favorite. Back in the day my mom could not watch this movie without crying every single time. I would usually want to rent The Fox and the Hound just about every other weekend despite her protests.
Watching it for the first time in over 20 years definitely brings back memories. It also makes me appreciate Disney’s century-long dedication to providing real drama, morals, and consequences in children’s movies. Oh, also, I had no idea Kurt Russell voiced Copper!
